Park Avenue Explosion Litigation
A comprehensive litigation portal managing multi-party claims arising from the East Harlem gas explosion. Complete party isolation, real-time case management, and HIPAA-compliant medical records handling — deployed in under two weeks.
The Challenge
The 2014 East Harlem gas explosion destroyed two buildings and resulted in complex, multi-party litigation involving building owners, the gas utility company, contractors, and a large plaintiff consortium. The case demanded a digital infrastructure that could handle:
- Multiple defendants with conflicting legal strategies requiring complete data isolation.
- Thousands of documents from building inspections, gas company records, and medical files.
- Court-ordered deadlines requiring rapid portal deployment.
- Plaintiff consortium involving multiple law firms needing coordinated but isolated access.
- Sensitive medical records requiring HIPAA-compliant storage and access controls.
Our Solution
Iron Curtain Architecture
Separate database schemas for each party. Plaintiff firms could collaborate internally while remaining completely isolated from all defendant data.
Role-Based Access Across 7+ Parties
Custom RBAC matrix with 12 distinct roles spanning judges, lead counsel, co-counsel, paralegals, expert witnesses, and court clerks.
Unified Docket with Isolated Views
A single master calendar visible to the court, with party-specific views that only showed deadlines and filings relevant to each side.
HIPAA-Compliant Medical Records Vault
Encrypted storage for medical documentation with access limited to designated medical experts and lead counsel per court order.
The Results
The portal was deployed within 10 days of initial consultation, meeting the court's deadline with room to spare. Over the course of the litigation, the platform managed more than 250,000 documents across 7+ parties without a single data isolation breach.
The unified docket system reduced scheduling conflicts by eliminating the need for cross-party calendar coordination — each side managed their own deadlines while the court maintained a master view.
The portal maintained 99.99% uptime throughout the multi-year proceedings, including during peak filing periods when document upload volumes exceeded 10,000 files per day.
